The Republic of Moldova (Republica Moldova) with its capital Chisinau (pronounced Kishinau) has ca. 3,7 millions of residents by its surface of 33.700 km². The state got its sovereignty on 27 August 1991. The republic came of the same name princedom and since 1812 belongs to the area of Russian influence. After gaining its sovereignty Republic of Moldova went over the free market economy, but some elements of state economy are still to be observed. The Moldavian economy suffered a lot from consequences of the financial and economical crisis in Russia in 1997. The economical reveal of the country has got much more difficult after the import embargo, because Russia is the main export state. The main problem is, that the product portfolio is mainly oriented on Russia, ant it makes difficult the search for alternative markets. The main export product of the Republic of Moldova is wine.

Here is especially to be mentioned Milestii Mici (pronounced: Mileshti Mich). It is one of the biggest wine cellars of the Republic of Moldova. The over 100 km tunnel system is not far from the capital Chisinau and goes back to the stone-pit at the beginning of the last century. Other export goods of Moldova are agricultural and food products of different kinds, as well as textile fabrics and products of plant-growing. The most important branches of economy are agriculture, services and light industry (footwear, garment, furniture). Also the ITK sector gains more importance and is countenanced by the state. Moldova imports mainly power sources (gas, mineral oil), machines and chemicals. Together with Russia and Germany, the Ukraine and Italia are most important trade partners of Moldova. The declared economical-politically priority is the elimination of bureaucratic obstacles and the offer of interesting privileges in order to attract further foreign direct investments.

Since the national language contradictions at the beginning of the 90th the industrial area in the east of the river Nistru set up on its own under the nostalgic Soviet government and is supported from the Russian Duma’s circles. As Russian forces, in spite of all statements, are still not withdrawn from this region, no integration of the area into the Moldavian territory is possible.
